For starters, I just finished up our skill system, instead of spamming the game's most powerful spell every turn, you'll have to think more; the most powerful skills have a cooldown (they can only be used every X turns). We plan to do the same to items, each party member can only use an item every 3 or 4 turns (an alchemist may be able to use an item every turn though).
For our battle system, we'll be using Cogwheel's RTAB, it resembles the Final Fantasy systems, you can see the style in this old screenshot: [link]
We also have a more interesting feature, which will annoy the hell out of me and modern, (it will require a lot of scripting >.< ) and I'll tell y'all about it in my next entry.
